Zoo Crew Leaders

Crew Leads are essential to running the day-to-day operations of Zoo Crew!

From covering breaks, organizing supplies, and speaking with the public, Zoo Crew Leads do it all! To help prepare you, Zoo Crew members must first complete the Crew Lead Checklist before applying to become a Zoo Crew Lead.


Half day shifts have a 15-minute break, full day shifts have two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch.

Full Day: 9:15am-5:15pm

Zoo Crew Lead Requirements

  • Ages 15-17
  • Complete a minimum of 150 hours over the course of the program (can include hours as Zoo Crew if from the same season)
  • Obtain recommendations from two non-related adults
  • Complete a phone or in-person interview
  • Sign a release of liability form (parent and/or guardian)
  • Have proof of current tetanus vaccine and negative TB test in the last six months
  • Abide by Zoo policies and procedures
  • Attend a volunteer orientation with a parent and/or guardian
  • Report on time for scheduled service areas
  • Wear a designated uniform while on Zoo property

  • Gain confidence with public presentations
  • Learn what it is like to work in various areas of the zoo, and see if there is a future in a Zoo for you
  • Spend the summer making new friends working with students from various schools in the area
  • Discounts available on food and Zoo Store merchandise while volunteering
  • Fulfill school requirements for community service (please see your school for requirements and needed paperwork)
  • Graduation certificate and celebration

Zoo Crew Lead Roles

  • Make sure Zoo Crew participants are showing up for each shift
  • Regularly checking each station to ensure there are enough supplies
  • Helping Zoo Crew and making sure they stay on task
  • Covering lunches and breaks of Zoo Crew at the station they are assigned
  • Taking on additional leadership roles 
  • Assisting with other tasks and projects
