Penguin celebrates milestone birthday!
The African penguins at the Children's Zoo at Celebration Square are celebrating being one decade old this year! Each of the penguins turns 10 in 2012. The most sociable penguin, Petey, decided it was such a special occasion she wanted to throw a party! She hosted her special bird-day on October 6th, 2012. Walk-through Aviary Ready for Visitors
Spring 2012 heralded the opening of a new exhibit at the Children's Zoo. The new walk-through aviary adjoining the Australian Outback completed it's last stage of finishing touches before it could be opened to the public. The aviary will exhibit over 20 Cockatiels, which are native to Australia, in a free-flighted environment. Guests are invited in and have the option to feed the birds a millet stick. Millet is a favorite snack item of these small birds, and the birds may even land on the feeders' hand! Included in the aviary are 2 completely enclosed exhibits for Poppy, the zoo's Umbrella Cockatoo, and Wedgie, the Moluccan Cockatoo. The Aviary will be open to the public seasonally, as temperatures are appropriate for the cockatiel flock.
